Using WS_FTP32
WS_FTP is an excellent FTP (file transfer protocol) program
for the PC. It is a very simple and easy to use program for those who wish
to transfer files over the Internet, without all that tedious mucking about
with command-line (DOS) prompts.
WS_FTP can be obtained for trial or purchace from Ipswitch software.
Once you have installed and run WS_FTP you should see the following
screen:
WS_FTP can have several profiles which allows users to customize
each FTP session.
- The Host Name is the name of the site on the Internet running
the FTP daemon. If you are uploading your webpage, that host will
be www.mondenet.com.
- There are various kinds of Host Types such as a UNIX server or
a Microsoft Server. The best option for this category is the Automatic
Detect option as shown above.
- Most of the sites that have Netscape or Internet Explorer are public
sites and therefore allow Anonymous Logins and they generally ask
for the users Email Address as the password.
- For uploading your webpage, use the username and password for your account.
- You also have the option of configuring the default login directories
of both the local and remote machine. Deciding whether to put anything
here will come after experience and what you find most convenient.
The Advanced button may be clicked:
- These are fairly universal defaults. Most FTP daemons run on Remote
Port 21, however, if you are having problems connecting
it may be related to an incorrect port setting.
- The Passive Transfer option is used to pass through a firewall
(in Local Area Networks - that is, the LAN in your office).
- Click OK to return to Session Profile setup.
Now we are ready to connect, on the
Session Profile Screen click Ok to connect and the following screen should appear:
- On the left is the Local System screen which is split vertically
with the upper section containing the local directories and the lower section
containing the local files.
- On the right is the Remote System screen which is split vertically
with the upper section containing the directories on the FTP server and
the lower section containing the remote files there.
- Your web-page files are kept in the public_html directory (unless we host your
domain).
- The arrows in the middle column are used to transfer files back
and fourth.
- The directories are navigated the same way as browsing windows in Win95
or 98. Click on the file you want located in the Remote System window
and click the Upper arrow to invoke the transfer. The procedure
would be Vice Versa for uploading.
- It is also very important that the data type is set to Binary
as Ascii is only meant for simple text transfers.
