Windows95 Modem Configuration

The configuration of Windows95 Dial Up Networking consists of two steps. Before beginning please ensure you have your Windows95 disks or CD available. As well, you may need all your documentation for such items as your modem.

Before your computer can connect to the Internet you must ensure your computer can talk to your modem. A modem may either be inside or outside your computer. To configure your modem you will do the following:

  • Click on your Start Button which is located on your Windows95 Taskbar.
  • Click on Settings, then you click Control Panel.
  • In the Control Panel, double click on Modems
  • On the Modems Screen you will see a list of one or more modems available to your computer. If you do not see this screen then your modem may not be properly installed. If you see more than one modem listed when in fact you only have one modem then this may also suggest possible modem configuration problems. On the General tab, click the Properties button.
  • Modem Properties: verify the Port and the Speed.
If your modem speed is v.90 then set your Maximum Speed to 57600. If your modem speed is 33600 bps or 28800 bps then set your Maximum Speed to 38400. If your modem speed is 9600 bps or 14000 bps then set your Maximum Speed to 19200.
Click OK, then click on the Diagnostics tab.
  • On the Diagnostics screen you will see a list of COM ports which are used by your computer. Typically COM1 will have a serial mouse and your modem ideally should be on COM2. This is not always the case but the optimum setting for a modem should be COM2 with Interrupt of 4. For each of the COM ports listed please click on them to highlight them then click on the More Info button.
  • First click More Info with COM1 highlighted: Typically COM1 will be configured with Interrupt 4 and Address 3F8.
  • Click on More Info with COM2 highlighted: Typically COM2 will be configured with Interrupt 3 and Address 2F8. The recommended optimum setting for high speed modems is COM2, Interrupt 3, and Address 2F8. You will also notice on this screen the UART listed as NS 16550AN. This is the chip inside your computer which is recommended for high speed modems. If you do not have this chip listed then your modem may experience problems. You may also see the INS8250 chip which we do not recommend. If you receive an error message when clicking on More Info for the COM port for your modem then you will need to correct that problem before going any further. It is essential your computer is able to communicate with your modem properly.
  • When you are finished, click OK then click Close
