Configuring and Using Macintosh Outlook Express

Similar to the mail program included with Internet Explorer 4.0 for Windows 95/98, Outlook Express is becoming more and more popular with new Macintosh computer systems. Many of the options, and where they are located, has changed.
The main Outlook Express window will look like this:

  • The configuration settings are now located:
    1. on the Preferences button on the toolbar
    2. the Edit menu, under Preferences:
  • The standard options are listed under Edit, but Preferences are located here as well (similar to Netscape Communicator).
  • Either way, the Account Preferences opens:
  • In the Accounts section, the E-mail option contains the main configuration and server information for your Mondenet email.
    • Email address: username@mondenet.com
    • SMTP server: mail.mondenet.com
    • Account ID: username
    • POP server: mail.mondenet.com
You are able to use multiple acounts (for other ISPs for instance).
To choose the default account is located at the top of this window.
  • Click on Advanced:
  • Here you can configure the client to Leave a copy of messages on server
  • You can also exclude the selected account in a full Send & Receive.
  • The other advanced settings are best left off.
  • Click on OK, then the News:
  • Enter the Server name for your news account (call it Mondenet).
  • Enter the Server address of the NNTP (news) server (news.mondenet.com)
  • Our news server does not require authentication, so these should be all blank.
You have the ability to configure accounts for other servers that you may know of, in the section at the top.
  • In the Outlook Express section, click General:

Here are the settings that allow you to tailor the program to your preference (for instance, Sound notification).

  • Go next to the Startup & Quit section:

Other email options are here.

  • You are able to set a Password that is required when Outlook Express is launched for additional security.
  • In the Network section, select Proxies:
  • Proxies should always be turned off. Otherwise problems browsing and getting email will occur.
