Configuring and Using Fetch

Fetch is the most popular, and most functional FTP software available for the Macintosh. Fetch 3.0.3 is the latest release, and has several features.
It includes:

  • resume partially completed transfers
  • drag and drop for transferring files
  • and a user-friendly interface.
  • After downloading and decoding the archive, you will have:
    • a Fetch 3.0.3 Folder
    • and a Fetch 3.0.3 icon on your desktop:
  • Double click on the Fetch icon, to launch the program:
  • The application opens with a New Connection prompt
  • In the respective spaces, enter:
    • the Host (eg ftp.mondenet.com or www.mondenet.com for your web page)
    • User ID (your username or anonymous for many ftp servers that allow guest login)
    • Password (your password or email@address.com for guest login)
    • default Directory (for the webpage public_html)
  • Clicking on the Shortcuts arrow will give you a list of all the previously saved connections, allowing you to select them easily.
  • Click OK, and the selected connection will be attempted.
  • After making a successful connection, a status window will open with connection messages.
  • The main connection window appears:
  • The status window will give you information about the connection, problems, etc.
  • The main connection window is a standard FTP window
    • choose the directory at the top (either local or remote)
    • Put File or Get File is for Upload and Download respectively.
    • The Automatic, Text, and Binary options allow you to select which method you would like to use for transferring files, Automatic should work for text-only and binary.
  • To transfer files:
    • You can drag files either inbound (local) or outbound (remote)
    • Click them and then click Put or Get
    • Or click Put or Get and specify the file to transfer:
Further options are available under the Customize menu, at Preferences. Those settings provide further control over transfers. However the Preferences are fine by default.
